Selecting the Right Color Scheme for Your Finished Basement

A finished basement is a huge bonus for any homeowner. While most homeowners try to make their new living space fit into the design of their above ground living space, there are homeowners that use the space as a hidden getaway—whichever you decide, there are decisions to be made.

Color! By finishing and decorating your basement, you are adding valuable living space to your home and adding to the comfort. Thankfully, there are many options to consider when choosing a color scheme in a finished basement.

The color scheme should determine the overall appeal of the space. Color has the unique ability to make a room more inviting and actually draw a person into the room. Regardless if your basement is underground with little or no lighting, or above ground-- with the appropriate color scheme, it will allow the finished space to feel brighter, create a comfy environment and make the space appear much bigger.

Choosing a color scheme doesn’t mean just choosing paint. As paint can be a source for mold growth. Instead, a color scheme can be used to choose accents, flooring, trim, and more!

Bright Colors

It can be extremely hard to brighten a dark basement, especially when it is located completely underground—the odds are certainly against you! But by selecting a bright color palette, the space will look uniquely larger and feel refreshing. If your finished basement does not contain natural light sources, a bright color scheme will create a much-needed fresh feeling throughout the space. Using the right details, furniture, and colors will lighten up even the darkest of spaces. Suggested color schemes are reds, yellows and oranges.

Neutrals

If you don’t exactly like bright colors, you can never go wrong by selecting a neutral color scheme. A neutral color scheme can be used in any part of your home, including your newly finished basement. This color palette also becomes useful when trying to sell, because almost anyone can feel comfortable and relate to neutral colors.

Neutrals are designed to match any decor, and create a warm inviting tone to the space. Suggested color schemes include lighter shades of green, taupe, gray and shades of off-white. The best part about this color scheme is its ability to match with most anything. Regardless what colors you choose to incorporate, they will go well with most decorative items-- as well as matching the furnishings you decide to place in the space.

Deep Colors

A basement is the perfect location for the home theater, game room or lounge you’ve always wanted! Selecting just the right color scheme for your new space will create the look and feel you desire. Suggested colors are hunter green, deep burgundy and browns.

These colors are designed to create the fun-loving atmosphere necessary for such a space. Be sure to add a dark brown trim, wall hangings or picture frames, a wooden bar and cozy bar stools or furniture to match the color scheme. This will greatly contribute to making your new finished basement more inviting.

Also consider placing games into the space for entertaining family and friends. Popular games are pool tables, dart boards, air hockey, ping pong table, poker table, and video or board games.
